DIN (Director Identification Number)
A unique number every individual must obtain before being appointed as a director of an Indian company, held for life and not tied to any single company.
DIN is a unique identification number issued to an individual, once, before they can be appointed as a director of any Indian company. It stays with that person across every company they direct over their lifetime, rather than being reissued per company, similar in spirit to how PAN identifies a person across all their tax matters.
A director is required to file an annual KYC to keep their DIN active; failing to do so deactivates it, which then blocks that person from being validly appointed or continuing as a director until the KYC is completed, usually with a late fee attached.
