Udyam registration is how a business formally establishes its MSME classification, micro, small, or medium, based on two figures assessed together: investment in plant, machinery, or equipment, and annual turnover. It's free, entirely online, and largely auto-populated from linked income tax and GST data.
Being Udyam-registered unlocks real, practical benefits: collateral-free loan guarantees, a strict 15- to 45-day payment timeline from buyers, with a tax consequence for buyers who don't comply, and preference in government procurement. It's a separate registration from DPIIT recognition, and holding one doesn't automatically grant the other.
