Frequently asked questions
Do I need my landlord's PAN on the receipt?
It becomes effectively required once your annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, since most employers won't process HRA exemption above that level without it. Below that, it's optional but still a good habit to include if your landlord is willing to share it.
Do I need a revenue stamp on a rent receipt?
Conventionally, yes, if you're paying by cash and the amount exceeds ₹5,000 per receipt. This tool flags that automatically and leaves a marked space on the printed receipt for a physical ₹1 revenue stamp, which you'll need to affix yourself.
Can I generate receipts for a full financial year at once?
Yes, set the number of receipts to 12 and pick your starting month. Each month renders as its own page when you print or save as PDF, which is how most employers expect a full year's proof submitted.
Is a receipt from this tool valid proof for my employer?
A correctly filled rent receipt with the landlord's details, the property address, and a signature (plus a revenue stamp for larger cash payments) is standard proof most employers accept. Some employers additionally ask for a copy of the rent agreement, particularly for higher rent amounts.
How do I calculate how much of my HRA is actually exempt?
This tool only generates the receipt itself. Use the HRA Exemption Calculator to work out how much of your HRA is tax-free based on your salary, rent, and city.
